Liberal Movement nominates Šuklinas ally for Nalšia North election

The Liberal Movement has nominated lawyer Mėta Paulauskė for the November 8 parliamentary by-election in the Nalšia North single-member constituency, LRT reported, citing the ELTA news agency.
Party chair Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen said Paulauskė knew the region and the issues important to its residents.
“It is important to liberals that the voice of people living in the regions is heard and that decisions are made by listening to the needs of local communities,” Čmilytė-Nielsen said.
Paulauskė was a longtime friend and political ally of the late parliamentarian Jevgenijus Šuklinas. They worked together on numerous projects.
Paulauskė said she would seek to continue the work Šuklinas had started and honour his commitments to residents, while offering her own experience and collaborative approach.
“My main goal is to unite the people of Visaginas, Ignalina and Zarasai, as well as their communities and businesses, to create greater prosperity,” she said.
She said her priorities would include accessible healthcare and nursing services, better transport links, more opportunities for young families and improved conditions for local businesses.
Paulauskė works as a lawyer and mediator in the municipalities of Visaginas, Ignalina and Zarasai. She advises people facing legal and social difficulties and works with families, young people, older residents and regional communities.
The by-election was scheduled after Šuklinas, who had been elected in the constituency, died in late May. The Central Electoral Commission annulled his parliamentary mandate in early June.
Šuklinas, a canoeist and known athlete, was elected to parliament with the Liberal Movement in 2024 and belonged to the party’s parliamentary group.
Under Lithuania’s Electoral Code, a by-election must be held within six months when the mandate of a parliamentarian elected in a single-member constituency ends. No by-election is held if less than one year remains before the next regular parliamentary election.
