A former cohabiting partner killed a 43-year-old woman after breaking into her home in Avižieniai, a settlement in Vilnius District, while children were inside, LRT reported. The attacker was detained by a neighbour.
According to the Emergency Response Centre, a woman called at 2 p.m. on Tuesday to report that a man was trying to enter the home after breaking a window with a stone. The information was passed to police, while the woman declined an ambulance that had also been called.
Four minutes later, another caller reported that the woman’s throat had been cut and said he was holding the attacker. Emergency medical services were notified.
LRT reported that a neighbour detained the man who had injured the woman with a knife and called medics. Young children were in the home during the attack. According to unconfirmed information, a minor also called the Emergency Response Centre to ask for help.
Medics attempted to resuscitate the woman at the scene but later confirmed her death. The attacker had also injured himself and was taken to hospital, where he was placed under guard.
On Wednesday, it was reported that an order related to domestic violence had been issued against the man who attacked the woman. The man, born in 1994, injured the woman, born in 1983, with a knife on the house veranda.
A pretrial investigation has been opened under Article 129 of Lithuania’s Criminal Code on suspicion of murder.
