Upleja-Jegermane re-elected to chair Latvia’s media council

Sanita Upleja-Jegermane has been re-elected chair of Latvia’s Public Electronic Mass Media Council for a one-year term, LSM reported, citing the council.

Her new term runs from August 4, 2026, to August 3, 2027. Una Klapkalne has been appointed to serve as deputy chair when Upleja-Jegermane is absent.

Under the law governing public electronic mass media and their management, the council elects its chair from among its members for one year. The chair organises the council’s work, represents it before public institutions and private individuals without special authorisation, and may attend Cabinet meetings with advisory rights on matters concerning public electronic media.

The chair also manages the council’s finances, appoints and dismisses secretariat staff, and signs contracts needed to ensure the council’s operations.

The council has three members and can make decisions when at least two members attend a meeting. Each member has one vote, and decisions are adopted by a simple majority.

Upleja-Jegermane and Klapkalne began their current terms on August 4, 2025. Upleja-Jegermane was reappointed for a second four-year term, while Klapkalne was appointed for her first term. Andris Saulītis joined the council on February 2, 2026.

Latvia’s parliament elected the council’s first composition on August 4, 2021.
