Language tip: Estonian expands the use of väli

In a language note published by ERR, Anu Nurk writes that the Estonian word väli is well suited to describing a field, an area of land or a magnetic field, but should be used cautiously when referring to areas of activity.
In its literal meaning, väli refers to a flat, unforested area or part of a field. In compound words, it can also denote an abstract area or space defined by the first part of the word, as in playground, rye field, battlefield, magnetic field, gravitational field, field of influence, electric field and other similar terms.
The word has recently begun to acquire another figurative, abstract meaning: an area of activity or research. This usage may have been influenced by the English word field and the Russian word поле. For example, the English expression field of activity and the Russian поле деятельности have gained the Estonian equivalent tegevusväli alongside the more established term tegevusala.
However, the ending väli can sometimes make a compound word sound artificial and unnecessary, making the wording more awkward. The same idea can often be expressed more simply and precisely with other words or by restructuring the sentence.
For example, a specialist working in social work can be described as a social work specialist or a worker in the social services sector, rather than a specialist working in the social work field. Changes in Estonian design can be described as changes in Estonian design, rather than changes in the Estonian design field.
Similarly, the question What is happening in the Dutch art field? can be replaced with What is happening in Dutch art life? Proposals from people working in education can also be described as proposals from people working in education, rather than proposals from those active in the education field.
Nurk recommends asking whether a new compound ending in väli adds anything before using it, or whether the thought could be expressed another way. Clarity, she writes, is the most important field of influence of good language.
