Chicago Sun-Times highlights Valdas Adamkus’ enduring connection to Lithuania

A recent article in the Chicago Sun-Times draws attention to Valdas Adamkus, the former president of Lithuania, who will soon celebrate his 100th birthday. The publication notes that Adamkus and Barack Obama are the only two presidents with ties to Chicago.

Despite settling in the U.S. city, Adamkus never lost touch with his homeland, the article states. It describes his career in U.S. environmental protection agencies before returning to Lithuania in 1998 at the age of 71 to run for president. His campaign focused on combating corruption, breaking from Soviet-era traditions, and strengthening ties with the West.

His wife, Alma Adamkienė, was initially reluctant to support his political ambitions, preferring a quiet retirement spent traveling and pursuing hobbies. “I must admit that my decision brought many tears,” Adamkus recalled.

When asked how he would like to be remembered, Adamkus responded: “I don’t think we should focus on how we want to be remembered. What matters is whether we truly contributed something with our lives. Personally, I believe that when I ask myself: did I do what I wanted? Did I do everything right? I can honestly say I am happy to have had the opportunity to contribute and to have given everything I could.”
