Lithuania’s birth rate hits historic low, Vilnius leads

Lithuania’s State Data Agency has released the latest official birth rate figures for 2025, confirming the country’s lowest numbers in decades, LRT.lt reports.

Last year, Lithuania recorded 6.1 births per 1,000 inhabitants—the lowest figure since 1994. Vilnius and its surrounding region had the highest rate at 6.9 births per 1,000, while Utena district reported the lowest at 4.7.

The natural population growth rate remains negative. Statistics also show a rising average age for mothers, now between 30 and 31 years, with first-time mothers averaging nearly 29. The total fertility rate in 2025 stood at 1.04 children per woman, dropping to 0.99 in urban areas.
