Lithuanian military conducts exercises to secure critical infrastructure

The Lithuanian military is conducting exercises in Klaipėda and the Curonian Spit this week to train for the protection of critical infrastructure, the Lithuanian Armed Forces announced on Wednesday.

The drills focus on rapid deployment of troops and military equipment, peacetime and combat readiness tasks, and improving coordination with other state institutions, according to the military.

“The Lithuanian Armed Forces continuously prepare to assist civilian institutions in responding to various security situations. One such task is the protection of critical infrastructure, which the Lithuanian Armed Forces already perform in cooperation with relevant state institutions. These exercises aim to improve interagency cooperation, decision-making, and the readiness of forces to quickly reinforce the protection of critical infrastructure and carry out other assigned tasks,” the statement said.

Personnel from the Naval Forces, Land Forces, Air Force, and Military Police are participating in the exercises, which involve collaboration with the Military Commandant’s Office, the Public Security Service, the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, and other civilian institutions.

During the drills, troops, military vessels, high-speed boats, and Air Force helicopters are performing tactical tasks in the Klaipėda port, port canal, and Curonian Spit areas to practice rapid response, protection of key facilities, and coordination with civilian agencies.
