Waste management crisis in Vilnius called a governance failure

Lithuania’s waste management issues in the Vilnius region are not a waste crisis but a governance crisis, according to environmental experts, as reported by LRT.

Ieva Budraitė, chair of the Lithuanian Green Party and a climate policy doctoral student at Mykolas Romeris University, stated that waste management in Lithuania remains a battleground of competing interests, leaving the public to bear higher costs. She emphasized that the current situation in Vilnius was foreseeable, particularly after a fire at a mixed waste sorting facility a year ago. Seasonal challenges, such as reduced waste incineration in summer due to lower heating demand, were also known to experts.

Budraitė argued that the failure to plan ahead points to poor governance. She stressed the need for long-term solutions to reduce mixed waste volumes in Lithuania, including in the Vilnius region, citing available methods in Europe and globally.

Domantas Tracevičius, director of the circular economy NGO “Žiedinė ekonomika,” agreed, noting that the crisis stems from long-standing issues. He revealed that he had proposed an investment plan in 2020 to improve food and kitchen waste management, but Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas, then deputy mayor, rejected it. Tracevičius highlighted that the lack of early action on food waste separation and ineffective e-waste systems contributed to the current problems, including fire risks from improperly disposed batteries.

He added that the situation poses significant risks to both public safety and residents’ well-being.
