Case of illegal migrant transport across state border referred to court
Lithuania Lithuanian prosecutors have referred a case to Kaunas Regional Court involving a French citizen accused of illegally transporting migrants across the state border, LRT reports.
The Kaunas Regional Prosecutor’s Office has requested the court to conclude the case with a penal order. According to the prosecution, the suspect, a French national, allegedly concealed 19 foreign nationals without permanent residence in Lithuania in the cargo compartment of a minibus in Latvia on July 5.
The migrants included 11 citizens of Iran, four of Pakistan, three of Afghanistan, and one individual of undetermined nationality. The suspect is accused of transporting them to Poland in exchange for a promised payment of €7,000.
On the same day, the man entered Lithuanian territory but was later stopped by police officers on the Jurbarkas–Šakiai road. During the pre-trial investigation, the suspect admitted his guilt.
The prosecutor has proposed a fine of €30,000 for the French citizen and the confiscation of €40,000, equivalent to the value of the vehicle used in the offence.
