Seimas to conclude extended spring session on new government formation

Lithuania’s Seimas is expected to conclude its extended spring session on Tuesday by finalising the formation of the new government led by Social Democrat leader Mindaugas Sinkevičius, LRT reports.

The session, originally scheduled to end on 30 June, was prolonged until mid-July after a shift in the ruling majority forced lawmakers to adjust their plans. Following the resignation of Ingrida Ruginienė’s government, the Seimas approved Sinkevičius as prime minister. He subsequently presented the new cabinet, endorsed by the president, and submitted the government’s programme for parliamentary consideration.

On Tuesday, MPs are set to vote on the government programme and complete the formation process. The session will also address the resignation of Raimondas Šukys, first deputy speaker from the “Aušra” faction, and the election of Domas Griškevičius and Jūratė Zailskienė as deputy speakers. These changes follow the removal of Remigijus Žemaitaitis’ “Nemuno aušra” party from the ruling coalition.

The Seimas typically holds two sessions per year, with the spring session beginning on 10 March and ending on 30 June, though extensions are permitted.
