Two judges recognised as most suitable to lead Kaunas District Court

A selection committee for judicial candidates has recognised two judges from Kaunas District Court, Sigita Meškauskienė and Vaida Motiejūnienė, as the most suitable to lead the court.

Both received five votes each from the committee, though Meškauskienė scored slightly higher in the overall evaluation. She earned a final score of 98.55, compared to Motiejūnienė’s 91.95.

Meškauskienė has worked at Kaunas District Court since February 2012. From September 2016 to June 2017, she also served as a lecturer at Mykolas Romeris University’s Faculty of Public Security, Police Activity Department. Between 2023 and 2025, she handled 407 criminal cases, 373 requests in criminal execution proceedings, seven pre-trial investigation documents, and completed two judicial mediation processes. During this period, 55 of her rulings were appealed, with 13 amended and three overturned. Her decision stability indicators were higher than the average for district courts (98.78 and 94.55, compared to 98.04 and 92.81).

She speaks English, Russian, and Polish, participates in national and international training, and is a member of the Lithuanian Judges Association, the District Court Judges Union, and the Judges Council (since October 2024). She has also been a court mediator since 2016.

A review from Kaunas Regional Court’s Civil Cases Division described her as principled, persistent, energetic, concrete, responsible, and thorough, with strong initiative and collaboration skills. An anonymous survey of 151 court employees showed broad support for her potential leadership due to her diligence, organisation, and communication skills.

The selection committee noted that Meškauskienė provided well-argued answers during her interview, leaving an impression of a motivated, confident, and determined individual.

Motiejūnienė has served as a judge at Kaunas District Court since June 2019, having previously worked at Panevėžys District Court from January 2016 to June 2019. Between 2023 and 2025, she handled 1,059 civil cases, 27 enforcement requests, and resolved 45 cases through peace agreements. During this time, 27 of her rulings were appealed, with three amended and six overturned. Her decision stability indicators were lower than the district court average (98.78 and 77.78, compared to 99.06 and 82.12).

She speaks English and Russian, engages in national professional development, and chaired Kaunas District Court’s Anti-Corruption Commission from December 2019 to September 2022. A review from Kaunas Regional Court described her as dutiful, strict, thorough, practical, attentive, principled, energetic, and capable of constructive dialogue.
