Lithuania expresses condolences over death of “good friend” Lindsey Graham

Lithuania has expressed deep condolences following the death of US Senator Lindsey Graham, with top officials praising his support for the country, reports BNS.

Acting Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys wrote on X: “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Senator Lindsey Graham. I extend my sincere condolences to his family, loved ones, colleagues, and all the people of America.”

“Senator Lindsey Graham was a good friend of Lithuania, a strong advocate for transatlantic unity, and an unwavering supporter of Ukraine. His dedication to the values of democracy, security, and international partnership earned him respect and gratitude from many across Europe. His voice will be missed, but his legacy will endure,” Budrys said.

Acting Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė and Speaker of the Seimas Juozas Olekas also expressed their condolences. Ruginienė stated: “Senator Lindsey Graham was a loyal friend of Lithuania, a strong advocate for transatlantic unity, and a resolute supporter of Ukraine. His commitment to our shared values and security will always be remembered.”

Olekas added: “Lindsey Graham was a principled politician and a loyal friend of Lithuania, Ukraine, and our entire region. He had a clear understanding of the threat posed by Russia, consistently supported NATO strengthening, transatlantic unity, and never doubted that freedom-defending states deserve strong support from allies. He will always remain one of the most prominent friends of Lithuania in US politics.”

According to BNS, Graham, who was 72, died Saturday evening after a brief and sudden illness. A Republican senator since 2003, he was a close political ally of former President Donald Trump. Graham chaired the Senate Budget Committee and had been set to seek a fifth six-year term in November. He was one of the most prominent members of the Senate and a key Republican voice on defense and foreign policy issues. Graham was also a strong supporter of Israel.
