Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has promoted two senior officers of the Lithuanian Armed Forces to higher general ranks, the presidential office announced on Thursday.

Giedrius Premeneckas, Chief of the Defence Staff, was promoted from flotilla admiral to rear admiral, while Žilvinas Gaubys, head of the Training and Doctrine Command, was elevated from brigadier general to major general.

In a statement, the president described the promotions as a significant recognition of the officers’ professional paths, leadership, competence, and exceptional contributions to strengthening Lithuania’s military.

Nausėda highlighted Premeneckas’ critical role in ensuring smooth staff operations and making strategic decisions to bolster Lithuania’s defence capabilities, as well as his work in effectively utilising increased defence funding and expanding cooperation with Ukraine’s armed forces.

He also commended Gaubys for his consistent efforts in modernising soldier training, implementing innovations, and enhancing the military’s readiness for contemporary threats.

The president urged both officers to continue improving their skills, sharing their knowledge and experience, and strengthening Lithuania’s national defence through their leadership.
