Kauno District Prosecutor Juozas Bagdonavičius has been suspended from duty after being formally accused of domestic violence, LRT reports, citing the General Prosecutor’s Office.
An investigation was launched under two articles of the Criminal Code: Article 140(2), covering the infliction of physical pain or minor health disorders against a close relative or family member, and Article 145(1), covering threats to kill, seriously harm, or terrorise a person. A restraining measure has been applied, according to Elena Martinonienė, a spokesperson for the General Prosecutor’s Office.
Police received a report on the evening of 27 June that a woman had been hospitalised in Kaunas after allegedly being beaten by her husband, identified as Bagdonavičius. The woman, born in 1973, told authorities she was assaulted at home around 16:30 the same day during a domestic conflict. Bagdonavičius, born in 1964, was summoned for questioning.
Bagdonavičius previously served as deputy chief prosecutor at Kauno District Prosecutor’s Office. In 2023, he and another prosecutor, along with a lawyer, faced corruption charges for allegedly giving alcohol to a prosecutor to allow the lawyer access to pre-trial investigation materials. All were later acquitted in court.
At the time of the alleged incident, Bagdonavičius worked as a regular prosecutor in the second division of Kauno District Prosecutor’s Office.
