Designated prime minister plans first visit to Germany

Lithuania’s designated prime minister, Mindaugas Sinkevičius, has said he would like to make Germany the destination of his first official visit if his government program is approved.

Speaking to journalists in the Seimas on Tuesday, Sinkevičius said: “Yesterday, at the State Day commemoration and flag-raising ceremony, I saw the German ambassador and told him that, if and when the government program is confirmed and I receive official powers, I would like to visit Germany.”

He added that while he could not yet confirm other visits, Brussels would “undoubtedly” be among the first.

Germany is one of Lithuania’s key security partners, with a German brigade expected to be deployed in Lithuania by the end of 2027.

On Tuesday, Sinkevičius, who leads the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, presented the 21st government’s program to the Seimas. Parliament is scheduled to vote on its approval next week. Once confirmed, the new Cabinet would receive its mandate and begin work.
