Lithuania to hold national women’s assembly in autumn 2027

Lithuania plans to hold a national women’s assembly in autumn 2027 to address women’s rights, LRT reports.

Acting Minister of Social Security and Labour Jūratė Zailskienė has established a working group to organise the event. The group includes Seimas members Dalia Asanavičiūtė-Gružauskienė, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, and Jekaterina Rojaka, as well as representatives from non-governmental organisations and higher education institutions. Zailskienė will chair the group.

“Earlier this year, in January, we met with representatives of various women’s organisations to discuss what we should and want to do to make women’s activities more visible and to address current women’s issues. The idea of such an assembly was already in the air, and we agreed that we would organise it together with various organisations representing women,” Zailskienė told BNS this week.

The assembly is expected to take place in autumn 2027, after Lithuania’s presidency of the EU Council concludes. Topics will include women’s mental health, emotional well-being, family challenges, and political participation, with a focus on increasing women’s representation and bold decision-making.

According to Zailskienė, the assembly should not only discuss issues affecting women but also adopt resolutions or plan targeted solutions to improve the situation. The working group is expected to begin drafting themes in August or September and will be tasked with preparing the assembly’s concept, forming an organising committee, and submitting proposals on content and organisational matters to the Ministry of Social Security and Labour.

The first Lithuanian women’s assembly was held in 1907 in Kaunas, with subsequent assemblies in 1937, 2000, and 2005.
