Former candidate for LGGRTC director appeals to Seimas ethics watchdog over reputation

A former candidate for the director of the Lithuanian Genocide and Resistance Research Centre (LGGRTC), Daiva Kabelkė, has filed a complaint with the Seimas Ethics and Procedures Commission regarding statements made by Social Democratic MP Darius Jakavičius about her reputation, LRT reports.

Kabelkė requests an assessment of Jakavičius’ remarks during a plenary session on June 11, which she claims violated the State Politicians’ Code of Conduct, including principles of respect, justice, honesty, and accountability.

During discussions on her candidacy, Jakavičius, chair of the Seimas Freedom Struggles and Historical Memory Commission, questioned her integrity and competence. He suggested doubts about her ability to handle classified information, maintain an unblemished reputation, lead a sensitive institution, and represent it internationally.

Jakavičius also cited her alleged historical inaccuracies, including a reference to the June Uprising occurring on the 14th rather than the 23rd, as evidence of her unsuitability. He implied her candidacy might be politically motivated rather than a genuine professional decision.

In her appeal, Kabelkė denies any political affiliations and states that Jakavičius’ claims lack factual basis. She argues his statements were a deliberate attempt to politicise her candidacy, undermining her professional autonomy and competence.

Kabelkė asserts that the MP’s remarks, amplified by media coverage, have irreparably damaged public perception of her suitability for public service. She maintains that his criticism was not constructive but a targeted effort to discredit her on three fronts: reputation, professional ability, and alleged political ties.
