Lithuanian president reduces sentence for Klaipėda woman who shot her husband

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has signed a decree granting clemency to Ramunė Alijevaitė, a woman from Klaipėda convicted of murdering her husband, reducing her 10-year prison sentence by three years, LRT reports.

The decision follows recommendations from the Clemency Commission, which reviewed her request in June. In December 2025, the Lithuanian Supreme Court upheld the conviction, ruling that the sentence was not excessive.

Alijevaitė, 45, has been serving her sentence since June 2024. Originally sentenced to 15 years by the Klaipėda Regional Court, her term was later reduced to 10 years on appeal. The courts found that in August 2022, she shot her husband four times with his own firearm in their home in Klaipėda, causing fatal injuries. She denied guilt, claiming no memory of the incident but alleged prior abuse and coercion by her husband.

Judges determined she acted with intent, as she failed to aid the victim, left the scene, changed clothes, locked the door, took a handbag, and made calls from both her and the victim’s phones. The court also noted aggravating circumstances, including her intoxication at the time of the crime.

Alijevaitė was also ordered to pay €50,000 each in compensation to the victim’s sister and mother, along with their legal costs. The case was heard in closed sessions.
