Storm causes widespread damage in southern Lithuania

Residents across Lithuania have shared images of storm damage, including fallen trees and flooded streets, as severe weather swept through the country on Tuesday afternoon, LRT reports.

The southern regions, particularly Alytus district, were the hardest hit. Meteorologist Gytis Valaika noted that Alytus received roughly a third of its typical July rainfall in just a few hours, with surfaces accumulating about three large buckets of water per square metre. He warned drivers to avoid flooded roads.

In Varėna district, Mayor Algis Kašėta reported power outages in parts of Valkininkai eldership, with Paklėštarės, Čižiūnų villages and Valkininkai town suffering the most damage. Authorities urged residents to stay cautious, avoid dangerous areas, and keep away from fallen trees or power lines.

Social media users shared accounts of the storm’s impact. In Alytus district, one resident described strong winds uprooting trees and downing power lines around 14:45, followed by heavy rain. Others reported shaking houses and brief power cuts in Anykščiai district near Troškūnai. A fallen tree was also photographed blocking a road in Akmeniškės, Vilnius district.

Hail was recorded in Alytus and Lazdijai districts around 17:00–18:00, while a rare sighting of lightning striking a tree directly was captured in Kaunas. The Energy Distribution Operator (ESO) confirmed that 4,536 households were without power across the country due to the storm.
