Stormy weather replaces heatwave in Lithuania as heavy rain hits Vilnius

Stormy weather has replaced the heatwave in Lithuania, with heavy rain reported in Vilnius, according to a report by LRT.lt.

The national weather service Meteo.lt warned that thunderstorms, short bursts of rain, and hail are expected across the country, with wind gusts reaching 15-20 m/s in some areas. The first signs of severe weather were recorded in western Lithuania in the early afternoon, with storm clouds reaching Vilnius by around 16:30.

Meteorologists confirmed that storm clouds were moving northeast, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms, and wind gusts of up to 23 m/s in some regions. Residents in Varėna, Prienai, and Marijampolė shared images of dark, heavy clouds and strong rainfall.

The highest risk of summer storms on Tuesday was in the southeastern part of the country, including Druskininkai, Varėna, Šalčininkai, and the southern part of the Vilnius region. Vilnius city municipality’s company Grinda warned residents that thunderstorms could hit the capital around 17:00, with temperatures possibly dropping sharply by 20°C and wind gusts up to 25 m/s.

Authorities advised residents to secure windows and doors, remove lightweight objects from yards and balconies, and avoid parking near tall trees. For those outdoors, recommendations include avoiding open areas, water bodies, and staying away from trees, billboards, power lines, lightning rods, or metal towers. Drivers were urged to remain focused, keep both hands on the wheel, and adjust speed according to road conditions.

Weather conditions are expected to change on Wednesday, with scattered rain and thunderstorms at night, temperatures around 13-18°C. Daytime will see clearing in most areas, with temperatures rising to 21-26°C.
