Head of European Commission representation in Lithuania steps down, succeeded by Martikonis

The head of the European Commission’s representation in Lithuania, Marius Vaščega, has concluded his term after four years and four months, as reported by LRT and ELTA.

In a Facebook post, Vaščega reflected on his tenure, stating that the European project takes shape not in distant places but in daily decisions, discussions, and joint efforts in Lithuania. He expressed gratitude to his team for their professionalism, trust, responsibility, and often unseen but essential work.

“It was difficult to foresee in February 2022 how demanding this journey would be and how much it would give. Today, as it ends, I feel immense gratitude for the trust, solidarity, and the honour of being part of it,” he wrote.

Vaščega will be succeeded by diplomat Rytis Martikonis, who has held various positions within the European Commission.

The European Commission representation in Lithuania serves as the Commission’s official presence in the country, providing information to the public and media about its activities, organising events, and coordinating visits by Commission members and officials. The office employs 18 staff members and regularly hosts interns from Lithuanian and foreign universities.
