Sinkevičius faces criticism over lack of resolve and ambition

Lithuanian lawmakers have expressed skepticism about Mindaugas Sinkevičius, the candidate for prime minister from the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, ahead of a parliamentary vote on his appointment, LRT.lt reports.

After meetings with opposition factions, critics questioned Sinkevičius’ ambition, preparedness, and the feasibility of his promises. Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, leader of the Liberal Movement, stated that Sinkevičius fails to acknowledge the failures of Social Democratic governance, adding that her party would not support his candidacy. She argued that a prime ministerial candidate should secure approval from the ruling majority.

Čmilytė-Nielsen also criticized the lack of ambition in Sinkevičius’ proposals, particularly in human rights, and accused the Social Democrats of undermining the healthcare system through reforms, only to shift responsibility to new coalition partners.

Laurynas Kasčiūnas, leader of the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats, said Sinkevičius had not demonstrated sufficient preparation or clarity on funding for coalition pledges, which would require at least €2 billion. Kasčiūnas warned that unfulfilled promises risked further public disappointment.

Former coalition partner Remigijus Žemaitaitis of the “Nemuno aušra” party also criticized Sinkevičius for cautious speech and a lack of resolve, contrasting him with other political figures. Žemaitaitis noted that Sinkevičius struggled to answer basic questions on issues such as same-sex partnerships and forestry policy.
