Seimas to vote on Mindaugas Sinkevičius as prime minister candidate

Lithuania’s parliament, the Seimas, is set to vote on Tuesday on the candidacy of Mindaugas Sinkevičius, leader of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), for prime minister, LRT.lt reports.

The Social Democrats decided to reshuffle the ruling coalition formed last summer, removing the “Nemuno aušra” party led by Remigijus Žemaitaitis. Disagreements among coalition partners have persisted since the 2024 Seimas elections, when the first ruling majority was established. If approved, this would be the third ruling coalition and government in a year and a half.

In mid-June, senior members of the LSDP, the Democratic Union “For Lithuania,” and the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union signed a new coalition agreement, securing 75 votes in the Seimas.

Orinta Leiputė, senior member of the Social Democratic faction, expressed confidence in Sinkevičius’ leadership, citing his openness, dialogue-driven approach, and understanding of family needs. “He is a leader who listens, not just talks, who values people by their work, not their titles,” she said. Leiputė also highlighted his political experience and vision, emphasizing regional development, business security, and public welfare.

Opposition leader Laurynas Kasčiūnas of the Conservatives criticized the frequent coalition changes, noting this would be the third reshuffle under Social Democratic leadership. He also questioned the competence of outgoing Prime Minister Ingrida Ruginienė, calling the past two years “lost for Lithuania.”

If approved, Sinkevičius will have up to 15 days to present a new Cabinet and government program, subject to parliamentary approval. He has indicated that six or seven new ministers may be appointed. The LSDP will lead nine ministries, while the Democrats will head the Agriculture (Kęstutis Mažeika), Energy (Lukas Savickas), and Health (Lina Kukuraitė) ministries.
