Unprecedented murder case challenges Lithuanian investigators

Lithuanian investigators faced an unprecedented murder case in 2016 after the body of a semi-naked man was found near the Via Baltica highway with a gunshot wound to the head, LRT reports.

The victim, discovered on April 12 near a gravel road close to the highway, had no identification documents, and no witnesses came forward. Initial leads pointed investigators toward connections outside Lithuania, complicating the case.

Senior investigator Airidas Remeikis of the Marijampolė Organized Crime Investigation Division recalled that the case initially seemed straightforward, with theories ranging from suicide to accidental death. However, as more evidence emerged, it became clear the crime was extraordinary.

“Until we have evidence to rule out certain versions or information about the nature of the crime, we always consider the possibility of something more serious, potentially linked to organized criminal groups,” Remeikis said.

Investigators found the victim wearing only shorts and a shirt, with a gold cross bearing Slavic inscriptions discovered beneath his clothing—one of the few clues in unraveling the mystery. Tire tracks at the scene raised suspicions, but with no witnesses, authorities turned to the public for help.

Donatas Merkevičius, then-head of the Organized Crime Investigation Division, described the victim as appearing “as if asleep,” with blood flowing from his head. The body’s condition suggested the crime had occurred recently, as rigor mortis had not yet set in.

Among the theories explored were a possible conflict at a nearby entertainment venue, an attempt to conceal evidence, or connections to other criminal activities. The lack of identification and the victim’s semi-naked state added to the complexity of the case.
