Heatwave sweeping Europe reaches Lithuania, 37°C expected on Monday

Meteorologists have confirmed that the heatwave currently moving across Western Europe has reached Lithuania, with temperatures set to soar in the coming days, LRT.lt reports.

According to Elena Kliukina, a forecaster at Lithuania’s Hydrometeorological Service, temperatures in the country’s southwest could reach 30°C as early as today. The weekend will see a significant rise, with 28–33°C expected on Saturday and 31–36°C on Sunday. Monday is forecast to be the hottest day, with temperatures in many regions climbing to 32–37°C.

Nights will remain warm, with lows around 20°C in most areas. A brief thunderstorm is possible on Monday. From Tuesday, the heat will gradually ease as it shifts eastward, with daytime highs dropping to 24–29°C and slightly cooler nights.

The service has issued warnings for dangerously high temperatures in the Kaunas, Alytus, Marijampolė, and Tauragė regions, where temperatures could reach 30°C as early as Friday. By Sunday, some areas may hit extreme heat levels, defined as a state of emergency due to temperature.

Authorities advise limiting time outdoors during peak heat, staying hydrated, and ensuring the safety of vulnerable groups, including children and pets left in vehicles. The current heatwave may challenge Lithuania’s June record of 35.7°C, set in Kaišiadorys in 2019.
