Jonavos mayor Sinkevičius names Majauskas as potential interim replacement

Jonavos District Municipality Mayor Mindaugas Sinkevičius has proposed Valdas Majauskas, the current administration director, as a potential interim mayor if Sinkevičius steps down, BNS/LRT reports.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Sinkevičius stated that if his nomination for prime minister is confirmed, the municipal council will appoint an interim mayor. He identified Majauskas as one of the most suitable candidates, citing his competence and long-standing experience in Jonavos.

Sinkevičius also suggested that current Deputy Mayor Povilas Beišys could take over as administration director, noting his municipal experience and involvement in key infrastructure and business investment projects in Jonava.

Under electoral law, if a mayor’s term ends prematurely and less than a year remains until regular elections, no early elections are held. Instead, the council appoints an acting mayor from among its members by majority vote. Majauskas, elected to the council in 2023, is not currently a member and would need to rejoin to be eligible for the mayoral role.

President Gitanas Nausėda has nominated Sinkevičius for prime minister. If the Seimas approves his candidacy and the new government’s program, Sinkevičius will have to resign as mayor. He has led Jonavos District Municipality, with interruptions, since 2011.

Sinkevičius was previously convicted in a 2024 appeals court ruling for misuse of public funds while serving as a council member, which barred him from public office. However, the Supreme Court of Lithuania overturned the conviction in spring 2025, ruling that his actions did not warrant criminal liability, allowing him to return to his mayoral post.
