Nausėda nominates Sinkevičius for prime minister

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has officially submitted the candidacy of Mindaugas Sinkevičius, leader of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, for the position of prime minister, LRT.lt reports.

Parliamentarians will vote on the new government leader next week. The nomination follows the Social Democratic Party’s decision to terminate its coalition agreement with “Nemuno aušra” and replace current Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė with Sinkevičius, who has already received Nausėda’s approval. The two met at the presidential office on Wednesday.

Nausėda stated that he hopes the process will proceed smoothly and quickly, in line with constitutional deadlines. He emphasized the need to maintain at least 5% of GDP funding for defense, ensuring transparent and effective use of these funds to strengthen national security, continue support for Ukraine, and prepare for Lithuania’s upcoming EU Council presidency.

The new government, led by Sinkevičius, will also be tasked with addressing domestic issues, including family support policies, long-term demographic solutions, regional investment, energy independence, and sustainable business growth. Nausėda underscored the importance of political maturity, responsible leadership, and personal accountability in maintaining public trust.

Sinkevičius, presenting his candidacy in the Seimas, pledged decisive and focused action for the remainder of the term. He described the formation of a new coalition as a response to growing geopolitical tensions and stressed the need for unity, collaboration, and mutual respect to build a strong Lithuania. He also highlighted social issues, demographics, and the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence.

The 20th Cabinet formally ended its work on Tuesday. According to the Constitution, the president must submit a candidate for prime minister to the Seimas within 15 days of the government’s resignation. If approved, the new prime minister must present a new Cabinet and government program, also subject to parliamentary approval, within the same timeframe.

A new ruling coalition agreement was signed in mid-June.
