Interior minister says data breach at Registrų centras is government’s shared responsibility

Acting Interior Minister Vladislavas Kondratovičius stated that responsibility for the data breach at the Registrų centras (Registry Centre) lies with multiple ministries and ultimately the entire government, LRT reports.

Responding to President Gitanas Nausėda’s remarks that he sees Kondratovičius as accountable for the incident, the minister said: “The president says he sees [responsibility]. That responsibility is shared by the government—many ministries are involved, many responsibilities overlap.”

He added that the situation would require further analysis, noting: “We will have to examine this case over time. I don’t know whether it will be me or another minister—it makes no difference.”

President Nausėda, after meeting with prime minister-designate Mindaugas Sinkevičius, said he sees Kondratovičius as responsible for the data leak scandal but did not specify whether he would ask the future prime minister to replace the minister. Sinkevičius stated he does not see personal guilt on Kondratovičius’ part but acknowledged that political accountability may still apply.

When asked about his future, Kondratovičius said he had not discussed it with Sinkevičius, adding: “We will talk later, then I will comment. We need to finish this ‘championship’—we have two more weeks until the end. When we finish, then we will think about other matches. We are working intensively, the schedule is full, we have tasks.” He clarified that the two-week period refers to the extended Seimas session, expected to last until mid-July due to the formation of the new government.

Media reports suggest that MP Martynas Katelynas is a candidate to replace Kondratovičius, though Katelynas has not confirmed receiving an offer.
