Prosecutor seeks 1.5-year driving ban for Laučius

Prosecutors have requested that politologist and journalist Vladimiras Laučius be handed over to the custody of his ex-wife and former partner, with the case against him dropped, LRT reports. Prosecutor Alvydas Markauskas also asked the court to impose a 1.5-year driving ban on Laučius, confiscate an amount equivalent to the value of his car—over €20,000—and require him to participate in alcohol prevention programs.

Laučius has fully admitted guilt, expressing deep regret for his actions. “I absolutely admit guilt on all counts. I understand that I acted very irresponsibly, created a danger to road safety, and I deeply regret it. I have never been in such a situation in my life. I teach students the principle of responsibility. I acted very foolishly and feel sincere shame. I will never repeat such a mistake in my life,” he told the court.

Laučius claimed he consumed alcohol after learning of the death of scientist Darius Aleknas, though police records state he drank due to an argument with his wife. Prosecutor Markauskas highlighted this discrepancy. Judge Ilona Mateikienė decided to apply an abbreviated evidence examination, meaning witnesses will not be called, and the case could be resolved in a single hearing.

Both Laučius and the prosecutor requested that he be placed under the responsibility of his ex-wife, Loreta Laučiuvienė, whom he described as a moral authority. Laučiuvienė condemned his behavior, calling it a “huge blow to our family,” but expressed hope he would not repeat the offense. She admitted to her own traffic violations, including running a red light.

The court will announce its decision on July 9.

Laučius was previously charged with drunk driving after causing an accident in Vilnius on May 31. Police reported his blood alcohol level at 2.32‰. He struck two poles on Laisvės Avenue before fleeing the scene. His Toyota RAV4 was impounded, and he later issued a public apology, calling his actions inexcusable. Police launched a pre-trial investigation into driving under the influence.
