The Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union (LVŽS) has no doubts that Mindaugas Sinkevičius, leader of the Social Democratic Party, will become the next prime minister following changes in the ruling coalition, party leader Aurelijus Veryga told Žinių Radijas radio on Tuesday, as reported by BNS.
Veryga stated that his party is only waiting for Sinkevičius to confirm his candidacy. BNS previously reported that Sinkevičius is expected to announce his decision on leading the government on Tuesday.
If appointed, Sinkevičius would replace Ingrida Ruginienė, who has served as prime minister since last autumn after a new Cabinet was formed following the resignation of Gintautas Paluckas.
A new ruling majority is being formed after the Social Democrats decided to remove the “Nemuno Aušra” party from the coalition and invite the Democratic Union “For Lithuania” to join. The coalition of Social Democrats, Democrats, and Farmers and Greens would hold 75 seats in the Seimas. A new agreement on forming the ruling majority is expected to be signed this week.
