Early elections in Jonava would not be held if Sinkevičius becomes prime minister
The Central Electoral Commission (VRK) has stated that if Mindaugas Sinkevičius, the current mayor of Jonava District and leader of the Social Democratic Party, were to become prime minister, early mayoral elections would not be held in Jonava, as less than a year remains until the regular local elections, reports ELTA via LRT.
According to the VRK, if Sinkevičius retains his mayoral position, the district would be led by a temporary mayor appointed by the municipal council until the next scheduled elections. The commission noted that the Electoral Code prohibits holding the office of mayor simultaneously with that of prime minister or another government member. In such cases, the mayor must resign, with the VRK formally requesting the termination of their mandate via signed electronic request.
“Since less than a year remains until the next municipal council and mayoral elections, if Mindaugas Sinkevičius leaves the post of Jonava mayor, early mayoral elections would not be organised in this municipality. Instead, a temporary mayor appointed by the municipal council would serve until the regular elections,” said VRK representative Indrė Ramanavičienė.
The next municipal council and mayoral elections are scheduled for February–March 2027.
Media reports indicate that Sinkevičius has decided to take on the role of prime minister, replacing the current head of government, Inga Ruginienė, following the conclusion of coalition negotiations. He is expected to inform the Social Democrats of his decision in the coming days.
A coalition agreement reviewed by ELTA includes a commitment to implement the Seimas-approved programme of the 21st government, suggesting a new cabinet will be formed, as the current 20th government remains in office. The agreement also states that the Social Democrats will nominate the prime minister and the speaker of the Seimas, though specific names have not yet been confirmed.
With the Social Democrats ending their coalition with the “Aušra” party, discussions have emerged that Sinkevičius could replace Ruginienė as prime minister. However, the politician has not yet clearly stated whether he will accept the role, saying only that he will announce his decision soon.
President Gitanas Nausėda has urged the Social Democratic leader to disclose his intentions as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, acting leader of the Democratic Union “For Lithuania” Virginijus Sinkevičius told ELTA that clarity on whether Mindaugas Sinkevičius will take the position is expected by Tuesday.
