Lithuania’s hydrometeorological service has warned of severe storms expected in the eastern part of the country, with Vilniaus, Utenos, and Panevėžio regions most at risk, LRT.lt reports.
The storms, likely to develop in the afternoon, may bring heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and even squalls with gusts up to 25 m/s. There is also a possibility of hail, though the risk is considered lower. Forecasters note that while rain and thunderstorms are common in summer, squalls are a rarer and more dangerous phenomenon.
Meteorologist Paulius Starkus explained that a southern cyclone is currently moving across Lithuania, dividing the country into two weather zones. Western regions will experience rain and cooler temperatures, while the east braces for the storm. The most intense weather is expected to begin around 14:00 near Vilniaus, before shifting northeast toward Panevėžio and Utenos.
Residents in the affected areas have received emergency alerts advising them to secure property and stay safe. Paulius Rinkevičius, a representative of the Fire and Rescue Department’s Civil Protection Board, urged people to remain calm but take precautions: close windows and skylights, secure loose outdoor items, avoid parking under trees or power lines, and ensure vulnerable individuals are accounted for. He also recommended keeping mobile phones charged in case of power outages.
