Storm warning issued for Lithuania with squalls expected

Lithuania’s Hydrometeorological Service has warned of a severe storm approaching the country, with the highest risk in the Vilnius, Utena, and Panevėžys regions, according to a report by LRT.

The storm is most likely to hit eastern Lithuania in the afternoon, bringing thunderstorms, heavy rain, and possible squalls with wind gusts of 15–20 m/s, locally up to 25 m/s. Hail is also possible in some areas.

Residents in the affected regions are advised to secure themselves and their property. Authorities recommend staying indoors, avoiding windows, unplugging electrical appliances, and preparing for potential power outages. Those outdoors should seek shelter, avoid open areas, tall trees, billboards, power lines, and metal structures. Drivers are urged to reduce speed, keep both hands on the wheel, and adjust to road conditions.

Morning forecasts indicated that rain, initially confined to eastern borders, would spread across most of the country by day. Thunderstorms are expected in many districts, particularly in southern Lithuania, with possible hail. Wind speeds will generally reach 9–14 m/s, with gusts up to 15–20 m/s in places. Temperatures will rise to 14–19°C in western regions and 20–25°C in the east.

The state-owned road maintenance company Kelių priežiūra stated it is monitoring the situation and is prepared to clear obstacles and ensure road safety if strong winds or precipitation pose risks. Drivers are reminded to remain vigilant, choose safe speeds, and watch for sudden hazards such as fallen branches or trees on the road. Heavy rain may also create aquaplaning risks.
