Prosecutor seeks 10-year prison sentence for teen accused of brutal peer murder

A prosecutor has requested a 10-year prison sentence—the maximum penalty under Lithuanian law—for a teenager accused of the especially brutal murder of another minor, state news agency BNS reported Tuesday.

Vilnius Regional Prosecutor Vytautas Jancevičius proposed the sentence during a closed hearing at Vilnius Regional Court on Monday. The case involves a 2010-born defendant charged with the violent killing of a peer in the capital’s Žvėrynas district.

The victim’s body parts were discovered in a waste container and a nearby wooded area in August 2025 after the boy’s mother reported him missing. The suspect, also born in 2010, was detained the following day and has remained in pretrial custody since. His detention, the strictest preventive measure available, remains in effect until early August.

The court session included testimony from a juvenile witness and began closing arguments. The prosecution’s case was built on evidence gathered during a pretrial investigation launched after the victim failed to return home in August 2025.
