Lithuanian PM and Ecumenical Patriarch discuss Orthodox exarchate and support for Ukraine

Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Ruginienė met with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople in Vilnius on Monday to discuss the establishment of the Orthodox exarchate in Lithuania and ongoing support for Ukraine, BNS reports.

During the meeting, Ruginienė thanked the patriarch for his attention to Lithuania’s Orthodox community and emphasised the importance of the exarchate, restored in Lithuania several years ago, as a “much-needed alternative” for believers who wish to practice their faith without compromising their conscience or convictions.

“At a time when Russia is waging a brutal war against Ukraine and attempting to justify it through all means of influence, this is extremely important not only for Ukrainians living in Lithuania but for all communities,” the prime minister said in a statement.

Ruginienė underscored that freedom of religious belief and respect for diversity have been long-standing values in Lithuania, enshrined in the Constitution, and that their protection remains a government priority. She also highlighted the significance of a firm stance against Russia’s war and expressed gratitude for the patriarchate’s support for Ukrainians.

The meeting addressed practical aspects of the exarchate’s operations in Lithuania, including current community concerns. Ruginienė additionally congratulated Father Panaretos Psaravtzos on his appointment as the new exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Lithuania, calling it a significant event for the country’s Orthodox faithful.
