Lithuanian authorities record six unauthorised drone flights near airports in one week

Lithuania’s Public Security Service (VST) reported six cases of unauthorised drone flights near the country’s airports over the past week, launching administrative proceedings against the operators, state news agency BNS reports.

In a Friday statement on Facebook, the VST detailed the incidents, all of which occurred in restricted airspace near Kaunas, Palanga, and Vilnius airports between 29 May and 5 June. Operators cited work-related tasks—such as inspecting solar power equipment, surveying a repaired roof, and conducting geodetic measurements—as well as personal reasons, including filming an event and practicing drone piloting. One individual claimed to be recording real estate for professional purposes.

None of the operators held permits to fly in the designated zones. While the unauthorised flights did not disrupt airport operations or scheduled aircraft, each case now faces administrative penalties under Lithuania’s Code of Administrative Offences. Fines range from €400 to €800.

The VST urged drone users to verify local restrictions before flying, emphasising that compliance is required regardless of whether the drone is used for work, training, or leisure.
