Lithuania is pushing to become the fourth framework nation of NATO’s Multinational Corps Northeast, a move that would strengthen its role in the alliance’s regional defence structure, LRT reports.
A delegation from the Lithuanian Armed Forces, led by Chief of Defence Staff Major General Giedrius Premeneckas, visited the corps headquarters in Szczecin, Poland, this week to discuss Lithuania’s future functions and responsibilities. During the May 25–27 visit, the delegation met with corps commander Lieutenant General Dariusz Parulak.
If approved, Lithuania’s new status would enhance its position within NATO’s defence architecture and allow its 1st Division to integrate more effectively into the corps structure and regional defence plans, according to the military.
“Becoming one of the framework nations would be a significant step in strengthening our operational readiness and cooperation with allies,” Premeneckas said in a statement.
The Multinational Corps Northeast oversees allied land operations in NATO’s northeastern region, including rapid response force deployments. It also coordinates NATO’s forward-presence battalions in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland, playing a key role in implementing the alliance’s collective defence plans on its eastern flank.
