Vilnius court extends detention of teenager accused of brutal peer murder

A Vilnius court has extended the detention of a teenager accused of brutally murdering another adolescent in the capital’s Žvėrynas district, state news agency BNS reports.

The Vilnius Regional Court on Tuesday granted a prosecution request to prolong the suspect’s detention by two months. Judge Lina Nemeikaitė stated the extension was necessary to ensure the defendant’s presence during proceedings and prevent potential flight or evasion of justice.

The court ruled that no lesser preventive measure—nor combination of measures—would achieve the objectives set by Lithuania’s Code of Criminal Procedure. Prosecutors allege the 2010-born suspect committed the “exceptionally brutal” killing of a minor earlier this year.

Preliminary investigations began in August 2025 after a Vilnius resident reported her 2010-born son missing. Parts of the victim’s body were later discovered in a waste container and a nearby wooded area in Žvėrynas. The suspect, also a minor, was apprehended the following day.
