Train car carrying sunflower seed meal catches fire in Marijampolė

A freight train car loaded with sunflower seed meal caught fire early Sunday in Marijampolė, Lithuania, fire services reported.

Emergency responders received an alert at 4:25 a.m. about smoke billowing from a sealed train car at a factory on Sasnavos Street, according to the Fire Protection and Rescue Department. The car contained 64 one-tonne bags of processed sunflower meal, a byproduct used in food production.

Upon arrival, firefighters found three of the bags smouldering. Crews removed the affected bags from the warehouse and extinguished them with water. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
