Vilnius has introduced a new system for recycling used cooking oil, with special collection containers installed across the city, the municipality announced on Monday.

According to city officials, over 1,200 tonnes of oil and fat were poured into the sewage system last year. The substances solidify in pipes, increasing the risk of blockages and wastewater network failures.

Properly separated and collected oil can be reprocessed into biofuel. One kilogram of used cooking oil can produce an equivalent amount of biodiesel, the municipality stated.
