Vladas Vilimas, former member of Lithuanian parliament, dies at 98

Vladas Vilimas, a former member of the Lithuanian Seimas and participant in the Sąjūdis reform movement, has died at the age of 98, LRT reports.

Seimas Speaker Juozas Olekas described Vilimas as a distinguished scientist, educator, engineer, and statesman whose contributions left a lasting impact on Lithuania’s academic, agricultural, and technological progress.

“His decades-long academic work, significant contributions to agricultural mechanisation, production storage technologies, and engineering solutions, as well as his efforts in training young specialists, have left a deep mark on Lithuanian science, agriculture, and technological advancement,” Olekas said in a statement on Saturday.

Born on 27 October 1928 in Mikalajūnų village, Vilimas earned his habilitated doctorate in technological sciences in 1995. He authored and co-authored multiple books and hundreds of scientific and popular science articles, primarily focusing on the mechanisation of agricultural production processes.

Following Lithuania’s restoration of independence, Vilimas became actively involved in public life. He was a member of Sąjūdis and, from 1993, a member of the Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrats. Elected to the Seimas in 1996, he served until 2000, concentrating on agricultural, scientific, regional development, and education issues.
