Law enforcement operation underway in Šalčininkai as officials gather at district municipality
A large-scale law enforcement operation is taking place in Šalčininkai on Tuesday, with officers from Lithuania’s Aras anti-corruption agency and other authorities present at the district municipality building, LRT.lt reports.
Local residents first reported unusual activity early Tuesday, noting Aras officers near Sniadeckio Street around 6 a.m. and later at the municipality offices by 8 a.m. Julia Samorokovskaja, head of communications for the Vilnius County Chief Police Commissariat, confirmed to LRT that an operation was ongoing but declined to provide further details.
“We are not offering comments at this time,” Samorokovskaja said. “A public statement will be issued shortly.”
Preliminary reports indicate the operation is being led by Lithuania’s Criminal Police Bureau (LKPB). Attempts by LRT to reach Šalčininkai district municipality leadership for comment have so far been unsuccessful.
The nature of the operation and any potential targets remain undisclosed. Authorities have not specified whether the activity is connected to corruption investigations, though Aras typically handles high-profile graft and financial crime cases.
