Lithuanian police have detained a 49-year-old man suspected of involvement in a high-value cash theft from ATMs in Latvia, LRT reports.

The suspect was apprehended on Thursday in Kėdainiai district after a cross-border pursuit. Latvian authorities alerted Lithuanian police at 11:46 AM that a black BMW—linked to a large-sum robbery—had crossed into Lithuania near Saločiai in Pasvalys district around 11:37 AM. The vehicle was later found abandoned in Kriaušiškiai village, with the occupants missing.

A State Border Guard Service helicopter was deployed, and a containment plan (“Operation Detention”) was activated. Officers intercepted a Volkswagen Tiguan in Skerdikai village at approximately 1:00 PM, driven by the detained man (born 1985). He is believed to be connected to the Latvian ATM heist.

The suspect has been remanded in custody while further suspects remain at large. Lithuanian police confirmed they had received a request for assistance from Latvian authorities regarding individuals fleeing Latvia after suspected ATM thefts. A pre-trial investigation into the acquisition or disposal of criminally obtained property has been launched.

Latvian officers had pursued the BMW after it failed to stop, leading to the cross-border chase. The circumstances of the incident remain under investigation.
