The drinking water supplied in the Lithuanian town of Lazdijai does not meet legal quality requirements, the State Food and Veterinary Service (VMVT) announced on Wednesday.

An investigation launched in early May found that water treatment systems operated by the local supplier, Lazdijų Vanduo, are functioning inefficiently, the agency said. The probe followed complaints from residents on Seinu, Dainavos, and Gustaičio streets, who reported tap water running brown, cloudy, and containing visible sediment.

While the water remains safe to drink, VMVT confirmed it does not meet quality standards. The supplier has been ordered to conduct repeat tests, identify the causes of the violations, and implement corrective measures. The company must also improve communication with residents, providing timely updates on water treatment work and any usage recommendations.

Residents have been advised to run taps until the water clears before use. If taste or odour is unacceptable, authorities recommend boiling the water or using alternative sources. VMVT stated it is actively monitoring the situation to ensure Lazdijai residents receive compliant, safe drinking water as soon as possible.
