Jonava district, Kaunas regional court, violent crime

A 36-year-old man from Jonava district has been sentenced to 12 years and six months in prison for fatally stabbing his father and assaulting his mother during a drunken altercation, Lithuania’s Prosecutor General’s Office announced Tuesday.

The Kaunas Regional Court found the defendant, identified as D. Č., guilty of murdering a family member and causing minor bodily harm to another, according to a statement. Prosecutors said the attack occurred on March 2 last year after the man, while intoxicated, became embroiled in a personal conflict with his parents at their home.

Investigators determined that D. Č. struck his father at least twice in the face and chest before chasing him outside and stabbing him twice in the back, resulting in his death. When his mother attempted to intervene, the assailant also punched her repeatedly in the face, causing minor injuries.

The court ruled that the defendant, a repeat offender, would serve a combined sentence under Articles 129 and 140 of Lithuania’s Criminal Code. Prosecutors had sought the maximum penalty due to the severity of the crime and the defendant’s prior criminal record.
