Body of missing man found in Vilnius district with signs of violence, suspect detained

The body of a man reported missing last month was discovered in a forest area of Vilnius district with visible signs of violence, Lithuanian police confirmed on Sunday. A 38-year-old suspect has been detained in connection with the case.

According to the Vilnius County Chief Police Commissariat, the body of the 43-year-old man, who had been missing since mid-April, was found on April 30 in a wooded area of Vilnius district. An investigation into his disappearance was launched on April 20 after a woman reported him missing.

The woman told authorities the man left their home around 11:30 PM on April 14 and never returned. She last spoke to him by phone on April 15 before contact was lost. Police, assisted by the missing man’s relatives and Red Cross volunteers, conducted an intensive search.

Investigators from the Vilnius County Chief Police Commissariat’s Serious Crimes Unit gathered evidence leading to the detention of the 38-year-old suspect, who has been charged with unlawful deprivation of liberty involving violence. A court ordered his pretrial detention on April 30—the same day the body was discovered.

The pre-trial investigation remains ongoing.
