Lithuanian government challenges street names honouring Cardinal Gulbinovičius in court

A representative of the Lithuanian government has filed legal challenges to remove street names honouring Cardinal Henrikas Gulbinovičius in Nemenčinė and seven villages in Vilnius District Municipality, the Regional Administrative Court announced on Monday.

The government’s submissions argue that local council decisions to retain the names violate street-naming regulations, which require honourees to have demonstrated significant contributions to Lithuania or its people, according to a court statement. The filings emphasise that Gulbinovičius’s legacy is incompatible with “universally accepted moral and ethical norms” following Vatican sanctions for offences deemed inconsistent with constitutional values.

“The failure to remove these street names would imply that the municipal council endorses, tolerates, or supports the actions of this individual,” the court’s press release stated. It added that Vilnius District Municipality had neglected its legal obligation to act, prompting the government’s intervention.

The court has begun reviewing one of the two submitted cases, while the second has been returned to the applicant for procedural adjustments.
