Vilnius mayor Benkunskas seen as front-runner but lacks clear achievements ahead of election
Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas is viewed as the most likely candidate to advance to a potential second round in the upcoming mayoral election, though political analysts struggle to identify defining accomplishments from his term, LRT.lt reports.
Experts suggest Benkunskas may leverage migration policy as a key issue in his campaign, following a recent press conference where he highlighted that one in ten Vilnius residents is a foreigner—a trend he linked to rising crime rates, proposing Lithuanian language education as a solution.
When asked what residents might associate with Benkunskas’ tenure, analysts point to the long-delayed National Stadium project, though its foundations were laid under his predecessor, Remigijus Šimašius. Other notable moments include hosting the 2023 NATO summit, where Benkunskas oversaw final preparations, and his public confrontation with developers over the controversial felling of a historic oak near the so-called “Moscow House.”
Political scientists note that while Benkunskas remains a strong contender, potential challengers have yet to emerge clearly. His re-election prospects hinge on whether voters prioritise stability over a record of transformative change.
