Lithuanian man charged with human trafficking and child exploitation in transnational crime case
A Lithuanian court has received a criminal case involving a Klaipėda resident accused of human trafficking and the attempted sale of a minor, prosecutors announced Tuesday.
The suspect allegedly collaborated with the leader of a criminal organisation to recruit individuals for exploitation abroad, according to the pre-trial investigation by the Klaipėda Regional Prosecutor’s Office. The case ties into a broader international probe into drug trafficking and human smuggling networks.
Investigators found that in July 2020, the accused exploited a minor’s vulnerability—targeting their youth and lack of life experience—by promising legal, well-paid work in Ireland. The minor’s mother intervened, preventing the trip. That same day, the suspect allegedly manipulated another young person facing financial hardship and health issues, arranging their travel to Ireland under false pretenses. Upon arrival in Waterford, the victim was coerced into distributing drugs through psychological pressure and dependence on the traffickers, until escaping on July 25, 2020, and returning to Lithuania on August 10.
The Klaipėda Regional Prosecutor’s Office, alongside criminal police units, led the investigation. If convicted, the defendant faces up to 12 years in prison.
The case was originally reported by BNS and the Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT).
