Late spring snowfall surprises Lithuania with wintry scenes
A brief return of winter conditions brought snow and near-blizzard winds to parts of Lithuania on Sunday, with residents sharing images of the unexpected late-season weather, LRT.lt reports.
Snow fell across many regions, accompanied by strong winds reaching 25 m/s in some areas. In Kaunas, a marathon took place amid the sudden snowstorm, with participants facing gusty conditions. “The wind has been raging since morning, and around 11 AM, heavy snow began—though it didn’t last long before the sun reappeared,” said reader Karolina.
Meteorologist Vytautas Patašius of Lithuania’s Hydrometeorological Service confirmed the wintry snap would persist into early week. “Sunday will remain windy, with northwest gusts of 15–20 m/s, locally up to 25 m/s. Brief showers—mostly rain but also wet snow—are expected, with temperatures struggling to reach 4–9°C,” he told LRT Radio. Warmer spring weather is forecast to return by Wednesday.
Residents shared photos in online weather groups, capturing snow-covered landscapes and wind-whipped scenes reminiscent of a full winter storm.
